Horseshoe Bend Sunset
Sunset in the Navajo Nation. Here the Colorado River snakes around Horseshoe Bend, where for millennia before the arrival of Europeans, native people lived off the land.

"On the third morning, Caradhras rose before them, a mighty peak, tipped with snow like silver, but with sheer naked sides, dull red as if stained with blood." - J.R.R. Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings.

Sunrise from Mt Whitney
After spending the night at base camp at 12,000ft (the small lake in the center left of the photo), I set out at 4:00am to push for the summit of Mt. Whitney. I knew the sunrise would be special, but I had no idea just how special it would be as I climbed under the full moon with our headlamps to guide us through the rocks and ice. I gasped for air above 14,000ft as the rising sun crested the ridge behind us. I looked back and this is what I saw. Sublime moments of extreme human exertion and unparalleled natural beauty like this one are very powerful.

First Light at El Capitan
Winter in Yosemite National Park...there's nothing quite like it. The main highway was closed due to a massive landslide caused by record-breaking precipitation in the Sierra Nevada mountains. I was forced to take a snowy detour several hours around to the south. I left well before dawn, hoping the conditions would be right to catch the sunrise from one of the best vantage points in the park. My gamble proved fruitful...the morning's first ray of sunlight struck the monolithic face of El Capitan, the sight of which left me speechless.
